Our 7th and 8th grades make up our Junior High. The core curriculum consists of religion, language arts (literature, vocabulary, grammar, and writing), history, science, and math. In addition, students take four enrichment classes throughout the year: Spanish, art, computers and physical education. Technology is incorporated in all classrooms through a variety of devices such as document cameras and SMART boards.
Religion: Although Catholic identity is infused in all subject areas, junior high students’ religion classes focus on Jesus’ life and teachings in 7th grade and morality and preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation in 8th grade.
Language Arts: The language arts curriculum integrates the Arizona College and Career Readiness Standards with Catholic identity themes. Literature selections cover many genres, and students have extensive instruction and practice of both narrative and expository writing as well as formal grammar and vocabulary instruction.
Mathematics: The math curriculum consists of Pre-Algebra for 7th graders and Algebra for 8th graders.
History: The primary focus of 7th and 8th grade history is the study of the United States, along with current events, with presentations by guest speakers and field trips to enhance the learning experience.
Science: Earth Science and Astronomy are studied by 7th graders and 8th graders by focusing on biology, physics, and chemistry. Students have many opportunities for hands on learning experiences such as dissecting a frog and owl pellets, building volcanoes, and creating Rube Goldberg projects, to name a few.
Junior High students have the opportunity to belong to many organizations that promote our school’s Student Learning Expectations. We have chapters of S.A.D.D. (Students Against Destructive Decisions), National Junior Honor Society, and Student Council. Students can also take part in team sports and train as altar servers.
